Aligarh ( formerly Kol) is a city in the state of Uttar Pradesh in India. It is the administrative headquarters of Aligarh district, and lies approximately 130 kilometres (81 mi) southeast of the capital, New Delhi.
It is a university town, notable as the seat of Aligarh Muslim University, which was founded here as Muhammadan Anglo-Oriental College in 1875, initiating the Aligarh movement.The early history of the district, through the 12th century AD is obscure. According to Edwin T. Atkinson, the name Kol was given to the city by Balarama, who slew here the great Asura (demon) Kol and with the assistance of the Ahirs subdued this part of the Doab. In another account, Atkinson points out a “legend” that Kol was founded by the Dor tribe of Rajputs in 372 AD. This could be further confirmed by an old fort, the Dor fortress, now in ruins, which lies at the city’s centre. It was re-named Ramgarh and finally, when a Shia commander, Najaf Khan, captured Kol, he gave it its present name of Aligarh. Aligarh Fort (also called Aligarh Qila), as it stands today, was built by French engineers under the control of French officers Benoît de Boigne and Perron.
Establishment of Aligarh Muslim University (1875):- In 1875, Sir Syed Ahmed Khan founded the Muhammadan Anglo Oriental College in Aligarh and patterned the college after Oxford and Cambridge universities that he had visited on a trip to England. This later became Aligarh Muslim University in 1920.

The same rankings ranked it 214 in Asia and 138 among BRICS nations.It was ranked 801-1000 in the world by the Times Higher Education World University Rankings of 2019, 182 in Asia and 157 among BRICS and Emerging Economies in 2017. It was ranked 18 in India overall by the National Institutional Ranking Framework in 2019 and 11th among universities.

Aligarh Fort or Aligarh Quila, Baunasaur Quila and Ramgarh Quila is situated in Qila, Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh. Managed by the Aligarh Muslim University, this structure represents historic Islamic influences from an earlier era through its exquisite architecture and intricate symbolic carvings. The magnificent edifice features distinguishing minarets, bastions, terraces, and a grand arched entrance that announces its presence to the general public.
There is a garden, supervised by the Botanical Department of Aligarh Muslim University, adds to the grandeur of the fort, with its diverse variety of vibrant flowers, trees and animal species such as delicate koel birds, beautiful peacocks and ferrets among others.
Teerthdham Mangalyatan is a Digamber Jain Pilgrimage site spread over 16 acres of area in Aligarh. Besides many temples in the complex there is Jain school of teaching and Jain food restaurant within the complex.
In the Mangalayatan complex, it is a attractive place. Annual Gatherings happen here from 30th January to 4th February. Classes and Camps happen in Diwali and Holi. The temple is decorated beautifully on Mahivir Jayanti and other Jain festivals.
In standing posture, the temple houses a white marble statue of Bhagwan Bahubali. The 7'3" high statue of the Bahubali stands on a 24" high lotus platform.
Khereshwar Temple is one of the holiest shrines of the region, situated in Tajpur Rasulpur village. This temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is renowned for beautiful architecture along with engraved ceilings of metallic mural finish. Apart from enshrinement of Lord Shiva in the form of ‘Shivlingam’, the shrine features several Brass idols of Hindu deities.In vicinity to the temple, there is a small pond and beautiful fields. The shrine of Lord Shiva is situated on Khair Bypass road which connects State highway 22 A and National Highway 91. Situated at a distance of 5 kilometres km from the city centre, the temple is easily accessible by various modes of public transportation .
The Central Library of the Aligarh Muslim University popularly known as Maulana Azad Library is one of the largest university libraries of the World which possesses about 18,00,000 volumes of books and 55,097 current journals in hard and soft copies. The foundation of the Library was laid in 1877 at the time of establishment of the Mohammedan Anglo Oriental College by Lord Lytton.
The Library is very much concerned with the conservation and preservation of the Worlds documentary heritage.It consists of many rare manuscripts.Valuable Sanskrit works on Hinduism translated in Persian are also available in the Library.
The Famous Aligarh Numaish (exhibition) was initially started as a horse fair for Nawabs. to display their wealth and lifestyles. In 1880, on suggestion of Raja Harinarayan Singh the event was named the Aligarh District Fair’ during the rule of the collectorate marshall. It is now called the ‘Rajkiya Krishi Udyog Pradarshini – Aligarh’. It is part of the life of the residents of Aligarh city.The exhibition is held every year from the end of January to third weak of February. This is awaited by the people of Aligarh with passion and excitement. Many families await this occasion for purchasing variety of stuff and fanciful items .
